Advantages of Aluminum Alloys for Ships

High specific strength and specific modulus
Because there is little difference in elastic modulus and density fir various aluminum alloys, adding a small amount of alloying elements or changing the state of heat treatment has little effect on them which increases the yield strength in a certain range makes it easier to reduce the structural weight of ships. Generally the density of Chinese aluminium profile manufacturer is about 2.7 ~ 2.8 / cm3 with the elastic modulus about 70 ~ 73GPa. However, high-strength aluminum alloy is usually difficult to equip both good corrosion resistance, so medium-strength and corrosion-resistant aluminum alloy is often used in aluminum alloy ships. 
Excellent welding performance

Welded connections has taken the place of riveting connection for its obvious advantages and it is now widely used in shipbuilding. Aluminum alloy has good means that the formation of aluminum alloy welding cracks tend to be small. Aluminum alloy has a good weld crack resistance, performance of welded joints changed little. Because the performance caused by welding cannot be revived  through re-heat treatment when building ships,  so this is one of the important features different from other marine aluminum alloy structure. Al-Zn-Mg alloys and AL-Mg-Si alloys significantly lower the intensity after welding, and the corrosion resistance of AL-Zn-Mg alloys is poor after welding. Therefore, these two alloys are limited in their use as welding ship materials . The AL-Mg alloy does not possess this drawback. AL-Zn-Mg alloy is mainly used as heat-treatable components after welding (such as torpedo shell), AL-Mg-Si alloy is mainly used for aluminium extrusion manufacturers profile.

Ship structure is often used in the harsh marine media and marine environments, whether it has corrosion resistance of aluminum alloy is one of the main signs of marine aluminum alloy. Generally, marine aluminum alloy matrix and welded joints tend no to be  stress corrosion, peeling corrosion and intergranular corrosion in the sea water and marine environment.
